Barbara Ruhs, M.S., R.D., L.D.N. is a Registered Dietitian and Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist specializing in retail food & health marketing communications and brand strategy for food companies, commodity groups, public relations gencies and supermarkets. She is an entrepreneur, strategic-thinker, and a leader in the field of supermarket nutrition. She recently re-launched Neighborhood Nutrition LLC, a consulting business offering nutrition counseling and retail-based health promotion solutions intended to help supermarkets sell healthy products and effectively communicate nutrition and health messages to consumers.

As a former supermarket dietitian for Bashas’ Family of Stores (Chandler, AZ) operating 128- stores, Barb set a high standard in developing, implementing and evaluating numerous supermarket based strategies to influence healthier choices across a diverse population of consumers. Driving more than $500,000 worth of annual incremental sales volume across all categories, her goal has always been to impact public health using the food industry and retail supermarkets as partners. She is passionate about helping people shop smarter to improve their health and is tireless in her mission.

Barb launched an annual Supermarket Dietitian Symposium in 2010 in partnership with Oldways, a non-profit organization committed to promoting healthy lifestyles. This annual event is one of the most highly regarded events among this unique and influential audience of dietitians working for retail supermarkets that influence millions of  consumers each week. Attendees are invited from the top 40-50 retailers, with all-expenses paid through a creative sponsorship program that offers continuing education credits while reducing barriers for attendees to come together from competitive retailers to focus on the goal of improving public health.

Adding to her accomplishments, Barb is also a writer. She has a regular guest column in a Progressive Grocer magazine where she shares her opinions, thoughts and ideas on food, nutrition and retail health. She regularly contributes to the syndicated publication, Environmental Nutrition, and her writing has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Reader’s Digest and many other popular health and fitness publications.

Barbara graduated from Cornell University with a B.S. in Nutrition and Dietetics and has an M.S. in Nutrition from Boston University. A former collegiate athlete, she enjoys an active lifestyle. She competed in the 2013 US Tennis Association Nationals in Indian Wells, CA.
